Principal Surveyor Global Safety & Compliance, Southampton, U.K.

The Cayman Registry, a division of Cayman Maritime, was established in 1903 and today the Register covers the full spectrum of vessel types, including commercial ships and private pleasure yachts. The Registry maintains headquarters in Cayman and a European Regional Office in Southampton, UK, with global representation in the USA, Italy, France, Netherlands, Monaco, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Japan.

We are now seeking to employ a Principal Surveyor based in Southampton, United Kingdom. Reporting directly to the Global Director Safety & Compliance (GS&C) of the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI), the post holder is responsible for the consistent and effective Implementation of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions and Instruments.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES & JOB FUNCTIONS:

The job functions include but are not limited to;

  1. Assisting with the development of Yacht Code Policy and the ongoing development and updating of the Red Ensign Group Yacht Codes;
  2. Monitoring activities performed by Classification Societies on behalf of the Government of the Cayman Islands;
  3. Develop and maintain effective procedures for the effective implementation of the IMO & ILO Conventions Instruments and Codes;
  4. Monitor fleet quality and PSC performance in order to maintain or enhance the standing of the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry within the major Port State Control (PSC) Memoranda of Understanding (MOU’s) and where applicable ensure that inspections are conducted on-board vessels visiting the Cayman Islands in accordance with the Caribbean MOU;
  5. The post holder shall be required to perform any other duties as requested from time to time by the Director-Global Safety & Compliance, CEO or Designate.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

To perform this job effectively the post holder must have a proven track record with one of the Classification Societies in a similar senior position and satisfy the following minimum requirements:

  • University degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture or a related subject and at least four (4) years post graduate experience in a technical role with an IACS Classification Society;
  • Registered with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer and Member of a Recognised Professional Body; and

In addition the post holder must have:

  1. Sound knowledge of the design, construction and operation of all vessel types;
  2. A thorough knowledge of the interrelationship of National Administrations, Port State Control MoU’s, Classification Societies, the IMO, and other Regulatory Bodies;
  3. A thorough knowledge of Classification Society Rules and Regulations for the Classification of ships;
  4. A thorough knowledge of International Conventions, instruments and codes appertaining to the Marine Sector;
  5. Sound language, analytical, presentation and IT skills;
  6. Ability to read, analyse and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations;
  7. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; and
  8. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
