The captain of Earthrace, the world-record-setting, futuristic-looking vessel which entered Cayman waters in mid-October, was ceremoniously presented a courtesy "Red Ensign" by Mr. Alfred Powery of the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry (CISR), a division of the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI) upon her arrival. Mr. Powery, Divisional Director of Registration, HR and Administration, presented the prestigious Cayman maritime flag to Capt. Daniel van Etten of Earthrace, which set a new record for the circumnavigation of the globe in 60 days, 23 hours and 49 minutes, in a shipside ceremony at the Barcadere Marina, where the craft was docked in the North Sound.

The goal of Earthrace was to set a new world record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe, running 100 percent renewable biodiesel fuel, and with a net zero carbon footprint. The journey, almost 24,000 nautical miles, was fuelled by biodiesel to demonstrate the efficiency of, and draw global attention to, the potential for alternative fuel sources.

Earthrace is also a trimaran, monohull vessel and runs sustainably produced B100 biodiesel. Parts of Earthrace are made from hemp composite, a world first for boats. Lubricants are made from vegetable oils, bedding foams are made from canola oil, bilge water is pumped through special filters to remove any oil or hydrocarbon and recycled ice cream containers were used during construction.
