Peter C. Southgate
Deputy Director — Advisor Maritime Policy & Legislation Development and Shipping Master
Peter C. Southgate is Deputy Director — Global Safety and Compliance (Head Office) & Head of Section – Yachts, based in the George Town Headquarters of the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI). As such, Mr. Southgate is in charge of the Survey Section in George Town and is also responsible for Large Yacht Policy development and maintaining the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry’s (CISR) position at the forefront of the Large Yacht industry.
After a period of time as a Surveyor with Lloyd’s Register of Shipping and the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency, where he specialised in Yachts, the naval architect joined the CISR’s UK Southampton Office in January 2003 as a marine surveyor. Mr. Southgate was promoted to Senior Surveyor & Head of Section – Yachts in April 2004. He later transferred to the George Town Headquarters in August 2004 and remained in that capacity until June 2006 when he was promoted to Deputy Divisional Director – Safety, Survey and Inspection & Head of Section (Yachts).
Mr. Southgate has over 25 years of experience in the shipbuilding industry, starting as an apprentice on the South Coast of England in 1983, and subsequently attaining the qualification of Naval Architect in the U.K.
He has observer status of the MACI Management Committee, is Executive Secretary of the Cayman Islands Shipowners’ Advisory Council – Yacht Committee, and is a corporate member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.
Mr. Southgate is currently studying for the award of a Law Degree (LLB) with the University of London External System. Since January 2009 he has been assisting the Advisor, Maritime Policy and Legislative Development, with the development of the Cayman Islands Merchant Shipping Law and requisite shipping policy.
