Background
This Notice advises of the statutory and other requirements for publications, log books and manuals on Cayman Islands flag vessels over 12m registered length.
Nautical Publications
The Carriage of Nautical Publications Regulations 2002 requires all ships except those less than 12m in registered length and pleasure vessels to carry publications for their intended voyage. Reference should be made to the Regulations for full details.
In all cases publications should be the latest obtainable edition and incorporate the latest relevant supplements and corrections. Required publications are as follows:
- Charts
- Sailing Directions
- Cayman Islands Merchant Shipping Notices
- Notices to Mariners,
- Annual Summary of Notices to Mariners
- Lists of Lights
- Tide Tables
- Tidal Stream Atlases
- Nautical Almanac
- Navigational Tables
- Operation and Maintenance Instructions for Navigational Aids carried by the Ship
- International Code of Signals (to be carried by all sea-going passenger ships, and all other ships of 300 gross tons or more)
- Mariners Handbook
Other Statutorily Required Publications, Log Books and Manuals
- IAMSAR Manual Volume III (replaced MERSAR Manual)
- Law and Procedures Manual (must contain the Hours of Work Regulations)
- ITU Publications:
- List VIIA, the Alphabetical List of Call Signs and Numerical Table of Identity of Stations
- The Manual for Use by the Maritime Mobile and Maritime Mobile Satellite Services. (For Passenger ships and other ships of 300 GT or more on international voyages)
- Code of Safe Working Practice
- Ship Captain’s Medical Guide
- ISM Code (Over 500 GT)
- SOLAS Fire Training Manual (Over 500 GT)
- SOLAS Life Saving Appliances Training Manual (Over 500 GT)
- Health & Safety Policy in writing
- Compass Error Book
- Official Log Book
- Deck Log Book
- Engine Movement Record Book
- GMDSS Log Book
- Garbage Management Plan & Record Book (Over 400 GT)

These are included under the general ISM Code requirement to provide applicable codes, guidelines and standards.

- STCW ‘95
- Index of Chart Symbols and a Chart Catalogue
Pleasure Vessels
Privately operated yachts (defined as “Pleasure vessels” in the Law) are not required by law to carry any of the above documents.
CISR policy however, is to recommend carriage of all of the above (subject to applicable tonnage requirements), in the interests of safe, proper and professional operation of the vessel.
