Radar Equipment and Search and Rescue Radar Transponders

RADAR EQUIPMENT
The 1988 Amendments to SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 12(g) and (h) require that, from 01 February 1995, all passenger ships irrespective of size and cargo ships of 300 gross tons and above, when engaged on international voyages, shall be fitted with at least one radar installation capable of operating in the 9GHz frequency band (X band).
Masters of vessels to which these Regulations 12 (g) and (h) apply should be guided accordingly.
SEARCH AND RESCUE RADAR TRANSPONDERS (SART'S)
The 1988 Amendments to SOLAS Chapter III, Regulation 6.2.2, and Chapter IV, Regulation 7.1.3, also require that all ships must be fitted with one or two 9GHz Search and Rescue Radar Transponders (SART's) by 01 February 1995.
Cargo ships of 500 gross tons and upwards and all passenger ships require two transponders whereas cargo ships of 300 gross tonnage and above but less than 500 gross tonnage require one transponder.
